NAQT SCT Southeast: full results, stats, gratitude

Congratulations again to Emory (Div. I), South Florida B (Div. I
Undergrad), and Florida C (Div. II) for their respective first-place
finishes at NAQT Sectionals Southeast, held at UTC on Sat. 2/5/05.
Full results and individual stats follow, but first:

GRATITUDE

For those of us who are more accustomed to the untimed format,
officiating for NAQT can be quite a challenge. We were fortunate to
have a strong officiating crew for the occasion. Thanks go to
officials Markus Iturriaga, Scotti Whitmire, Dave Leach, Richard
Dunlap, Wes Eddings, Scott Sanders, Dave Leach, James Quintong,
Stephen Webb, Shae Williams, Joseph Dion, Eileen Steinhice, and the
UTC team's John Kilby, David Moore, Nikki Poarch, Ashley Rousselle,
Eric Fox, Robby Trail, and Zach Cross. Thanks also to the UTC
contingent for room setup and to my sister Eileen for making a 50-
mile drive on the lunch break to pick up a much-needed reader for the
afternoon. A special "welcome back" goes to Yolanda Fernandez, who
with Nikki handled most of the stats and tournament logistics. We
also appreciate the players from Division I's bye teams who filled in
for the remaining scorekeeping duties.

TEAM RESULTS

With one late cancellation, we had 11 teams in Division I (4 of which
were all undergrad) and 10 in Division II. Each division played an
11-round round robin plus three rounds brackets. When there was a
tie for the 4th spot between Florida AARP and South Florida B in the
top bracket in Division I, after consulting the NAQT tiebreaker and
elimination policies, we realized we had to hold a play-in game,
which Florida A won 410-120. This explains the order of finish, in
which Vanderbilt A (from the top bracket) finished ahead of South
Florida B (from the second bracket.) Similarly, Tennessee B was in
the top bracket in Division II and thus finished ahead of Georgia B.

The title was decided in nail-biting fashion. Going into the last
game of the bracketed round robin, South Florida A held a one-game
lead over Emory. To even their records at 10-3 and force a playoff,
Emory defeated South Florida A on the third tossup of overtime.
Emory then won the championship, 375-255.
