Re: BBIV stuff

That's because the profanities were directed towards the
tournament officials. (Well that is not true. They weren't
directed towards the officials. But they were caused by
actions taken by the officials.) And under the
circumstances, I can't really blame him.

For those who
were not present, a brief background:

BBIV
consisted of each team (14 teams, 2 brackets)playing six
matches before lunch. The top four teams from each
bracket advanced to the championship round; the bottom
three teams, to a relegation round.

Returning
from lunch, everyone met in one of the rooms and the
seeding for the afternoon were written on the chalkboard.
(There were no paper copies available and no records
shown on the chalkboard). My team, Cornell, was listed
as the #5 seed out of our division of seven teams. I
found this odd, since we were 3-3. I'm not a math
major, but my intuition told me that if Georgetown was
undefeated (which I knew to be true) as the #1 seed and we
were 3-3 and the #5 seed, either there was a big
Circle of Death involving us, some remarkable upsets, or
something was messed up.

Edmund told me there were
no circle of death and there were only 2-way ties
for placement (broken by H2H). He dismissed everyone
to their rounds and the players all dispersed. I
asked the UMBC folks (#4 seed) and Homer's Donuts
B/Mike Starsinic (#3 seed) and discovered that they were
both 3-3 also.

Meaning that the tournament
officials somehow f--ked up in counting the W-L records. I
told Edmund and Tim Young of this and they proceeded
to check their scoresheets. (I am still unsure as to
whether the blame for this error lies with a game
official, a GW staffer, or the tournament directors.)
Eventually they stopped some of the matches while they
checked. After crunching all the numbers and applying all
of the tiebrakers (which weren't explained to the
teams in advance BTW), they determined that Cornell was
actually the #3 seed, UMBC remained #4, and Homer's Donuts
was now #5.

Which is where Mike Starsinic
started his outburst. And I still can't really blame
him.
