Big Lots Clearance Open trash tournament at UTC 10/23

UTC will once again host the Big Lots Clearance Open in Chattanooga
on Sun., Oct. 23, 2005. This is a trash tournament, open to all
players regardless of collegiate affiliation or lack thereof. We are
mirroring the devilishly entertaining FOGHAT tournament, co-edited
and mostly written by Jeremy White and Ben Lea. This means packet
submission is NOT required. However, teams can still earn discounts
by writing academic questions for us to use in either our high school
tournament on 10/1 or our collegiate tournament (COTKU) on 10/22.

There will also be a K-Tel Hell-style music game included -- now if I
could just remember who volunteered to run this one....

TIME & PLACE: To help our long-distance friends, we'll begin
registration at 8:30 AM EDT on Sun. 10/23/05, with play starting at 9
AM. Based on typical field sizes, we may finish as early as 5 PM and
surely no later than 7:30. Tournament headquarters will probably be
Holt 124, and if not we'll post signs at Holt telling you where to
meet. If you need directions to Holt -- and by now most of you
won't -- e-mail me, or see the COTKU announcement.

ELIGIBILITY: This tournament is open to any sentient primates who can
muster the fees; players from other orders of mammal will be admitted
on a case-by-case basis. But seriously, teams do not have to have any
academic affiliation. If you want to play, and you tell me in time,
you're in. If you want to make yourself available as a free agent to
join a team -- or if you have a partial team in need of free agent
help -- let me know and I'll pass it along.

FORMAT: 20 questions per round, untimed. Again, there's no packet
submission. Teams will be four players each, with alternates OK as
long as there are no substitutions in mid-match. Depending on the
number of teams, the format will be round robin or bracketed round
robin. This of course means I need to know the number of teams in
advance.

 FEES:
 Base fee $90 per team
Minimum fee after discounts: $50 per team
 Discounts:
- $10 for an experienced reader for Big Lots itself (*or* said reader
can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night 10/22 if
they'd prefer, and who wouldn't?)
- $10 for an experienced reader for COTKU Saturday 10/22 (*or* said
reader can join us for dinner at Provino's after COTKU Sat. night if
they'd prefer, and, again, who wouldn't?)
- $10 for each team member who officiates at the Trevor's Trivia: Bob
Selcer Memorial HS tournament on Sat., Oct. 1 [unless the same
discount was applied to COTKU fees]
- $5 for a working buzzer (additional $5 for a second buzzer if it's
needed)
- $15, *plus* a free set of questions, for each original packet (or
equivalent) written for the aforementioned high school tournament
(Trevor's Trivia) and sent to me by 9/15/05. If you're interested
and need packet specs, e-mail me.
- $15, *plus* a free set of questions, for each blind original packet
(or equivalent) written for our collegiate tournament (COTKU) and
sent to me by 10/14/05. Again, if you're interested and need packet
specs, e-mail me.

ACCOMMODATIONS: The Clarion Hotel offers a discount rate of $66/night
if you tell them you're with the UTC quizbowl tournament. The
Clarion's number is (423) 756-5150.

WHO'S IN CHARGE HERE: Oh, *him* again. Tournament director will be
Charlie Steinhice. Contact me at steinhic [at] bellsouth [dot] net
for further details, or call me on my cell phone at (423) 504-8255.
