ACF Fall for the Mid-Atlantic at Maryland

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team officially announces the ACF Fall
Mid-Atlantic tournament to be held at our College Park Campus on
Saturday, November 12.

Registration Deadline: October 1 (teams will be allowed to register
after the deadline at the discretion of the tournament director - this
deadline is for your benefit, as the no-penalty deadline for packet
submission is October 7)

Base fee: $85
Minimum fee: $60
No-Packet penalties: $50 for experienced teams, $30 for teams new to
ACF

Discounts:
Working Buzzer System: Minus $5 (limit 3 per school)
Full-time Moderator (confirmed by October 15): Minus $10
Full-time Moderator (not confirmed): Minus $5
Travel (over 300 miles via MapQuest): Minus $10
Additional Teams: Minus $5 per team (i.e. the base fee for your second
team is $80, your third is $75)

*All applicable discounts will be applied once. If you bring one
moderator and two teams, only one team will receive the discount.
However, if you bring multiple teams, extra discounts will be applied
to subsequent teams until all discounts are accounted for.

**I strongly encourage teams playing at both ACF Fall and TRASH
Regionals to bring moderators. If you can feasibly fit 5 people in a
car, you will have an extra player that can moderate each day,
resulting in discounts both days.

Penalties (besides packet):
Confirmed Moderator No-Show: Plus $20
Showing up late to the tournament (after the first round starts): Plus
$5 per round per team

Cancellation within 48 hours of Tournament without just cause: Half of
whatever your current fee is (e.g. a team that would be charged $60 if
they had shown up would be assessed a fee of $30)
Not showing up at the tournament without cancellation: 3/4 of what
your current fee is

(Please note that failure to pay cancellation fees will result in your
school being banned from future tournaments at Maryland until the
account is settled)

These penalties are meant to make the tournament run as smooth as
possible, and we'd rather not have to enforce them.

Specific packet distributions can be found on message 15611 of this
group. Some basics (but please check out the proper thread to make
sure that your packets comply):

Literature 5/5
History 5/5
Science 5/5
Religion, Mythology and Philosophy 3/3
Fine Arts 3/3
Social Science 1/1
Geography 1/1
Your Choice (may be trash) 1/1
Total: 24/24

Teams that are new to ACF may write 10/10 of their choice, but are
encouraged to attempt a full packet. The ACF Fall editors will also
be offering feedback on packets submitted on or before the no penalty
deadline. Teams that would like feedback should say so in their
packet-submission email.

All packets must be submitted to Eric Kwarlter ekwartler_at_...
[ekwartler (at) gmail (dot) com] in Microsoft Word format (again check
the proper thread to make sure that your packets comply -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/quizbowl/message/15611).

Note: Packets must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the specified days.
September 9th : Minus $20
September 23rd : Minus $10
October 7th : No Penalty
October 14th : Plus $10
October 21st : Plus $20
October 28th : Plus $40

Your tournament director is me (Casey Retterer), available at
crettere_at_... [crettere (at) umd (dot) edu]. Please let me know if
you have any questions, would like to register a team or clarify
anything.

Once teams start registering (we already have one team from Princeton
and two more possible registrations), I will create a mailing list and
include directions to campus, et cetera.

We are still in the middle of changing webmasters, but we will
hopefully have our webpage updated within the next few weeks.
