Florida State High School Tournament -- October 15, 2005

Florida State High School Tournament
Tallahassee, Florida
Saturday, October 15, 2005

INTRODUCTION:
Your school is invited to enter a team or teams in the Florida State
High School Tournament, to be held on the campus of Florida State
University in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday, October 15, 2005.
Please feel free to contact me, Billy Beyer, at wfb04_at_... or (386)
334-4109 with any questions, or to register your team(s).

ELIGIBILITY:
This is intended as a high school tournament. Multiple teams may
participate from the same school, but players on any given team must
be enrolled in the same school, and we can't accommodate switching
from one team to another during the tournament. If there are eight or
more JV teams (defined as 9th and 10th grade students), then there
will be a separate division. Regardless, notable JV achievements will
be recognized.

FORMAT:
This tournament will be ACF style, meaning untimed rounds of 20
tossups (worth 10 pts. each) and up to 20 bonuses (worth a possible 30
pts. each.) Questions will be distributed across various academic
categories, with a smattering of pop culture thrown in. If your team
would like to play with powers, let me know. Also, if your team would
like to play with bouncebacks, let me know. There will be six
preliminary rounds, followed by playoffs. Teams will be encouraged to
continue playing, even after they are eliminated in the playoffs.
Owing to the number of readers expected, we have tentatively capped
the field at 32 teams. If we get more readers we may be able to expand
this. If there is interest, I can try to get this tournament to be a
PACE-NSC qualifier.

FEES:
The entry fee per team is sixty-five dollars, if you register on or
before September 26th. Otherwise, the base fee will be seventy-five
dollars. Questions from the tournament can be purchased by teams
attending for $10. Should you not be able to attend the tournament,
questions can be ordered for $20, shipped. Please make checks out to
Florida State College Bowl. Cash is acceptable.
Discounts include:
-$5 per buzzer system (one discount per team)
-$10 each additional team

QUESTIONS:
This will be a house-written tournament, with most of the questions
written by yours truly, with help from tenured members of the FSU
Academic Team. Questions will be pyramidal in nature, allowing teams
with the most knowledge to prevail in most cases. At the same time,
questions will be on subjects accessible to most high school students.
Bonuses have been written in an attempt that most teams will get 10,
some will get 20, and fewer will get all 30, although it's entirely
possible. There will not be any math calculation questions. However,
it's always good to bring a pencil and paper/notebook. The difficulty
of the questions will be similar to that of NAQT's invitational series
of high school ("IS") packet sets.

SCHEDULE:
Registration will begin at 8:15 EST, with announcements at 9:00, and
round one beginning at 9:15. There will be a break for lunch. When
registering your teams, please note whether you would like pizza to be
delivered to the tournament site, or whether you would like to be able
to go off-campus for lunch. The tournament should be over by 4:00.

LOCATION:
Tournament headquarters will be in Bellamy Hall, Room 108 at the
Florida State campus in Tallahassee. Teams are suggested to park in
the parking garage at the corner of Woodward and West Tennessee St.
(aka SR90 aka Mahan). Very explicit directions to that location will
be provided to all participants well in advance of the event.

REGISTRATION:
The deadline for registration is Monday, October 10th, 2005. To
register, simply e-mail me stating your interest, and include the
following information:
1) The name of your school or institution.
2) The location of your school or institution in "city, state" format.
3) The name of coach or other contact person, along with e-mail
address and phone number for that person.
4) The number of teams that you will bring.
5) Whether or not you will be bringing a functional buzzer system.
6) Your preference on lunch, powers, and bouncebacks.
