Re: Speaking of New Jersey . . .

Actually at one point, the GW team could have
been called "Rutgers - Foggy Bottom", as the team
featured me, Guy, John Rambo, Amy Kroll, Jeff Boulier
(briefly a native) and Gary Greenbaum - all NJ natives.

At GW practices from 1992-96, questions on Bruce
Springsteen, organized crime, toxic chemicals and Uncle Floyd
were NEVER missed. :)

As for the lack of a New
Jersey college quizbowl circuit (only Princeton has had
a regular team in recent years, but Rutgers is
trying), I think it partly has to do with the fact that
many Jersey colleges have a reputation of being
"commuter" schools, making it difficult to recruit
interested students (Four of the five players on MSU's
1996-97 CBI team, if I remember correctly, were
commuters).

Having advised Montclair State's team in
1996-97, it was very hard to find students interested in
doing quiz bowl full-time - of the 30-40 students who
participated in CBI IM's - only 1-2 expressed interest in
playing in non-CBI tourneys.

 As always, money
plays a factor as well.

 There have been many NJ
schools over the years who have appeared in Region 3 -
Seton Hall, Ramapo, Essex CC, William Paterson and the
College Formerly Known as Trenton State come to mind -
but full-time quizbowl in NJ, outside Princeton and
hopefully Rutgers, is almost non-existent.
