2006 Benjamin Cooper Award Nomination

Benjamin Cooper Award Nomination

Dear Committee Members,

I would like to nominate Lee Henry from Brindlee Mountain
High School for consideration for the Benjamin Cooper Award.

I have known Lee Henry for six years as a quiz bowl sponsor. In that
time, I have seen Lee go to great lengths to support the quiz bowl
community. Lee has always been very supportive of new programs and
offering help and guidance to new coaches, like myself when I started
six years ago and then continually helping by offering player critiques
and suggestions on ways to improve team play.

Lee has also attempted to improve the question format and
content in the tournaments in Alabama. Lee introduced the use of
pyramidal style questions for use with middle school tournament at his
tournaments. This allowed other coaches to see the advantage of using
this type of question style and incorporate it into their invitational
tournaments.

Lee has worked very hard at improving the content of the questions by
using more classical literature, science, and history into the questions
that he uses for his tournaments and also for the ones those he sales to
others for use in their tournaments.

Lee is also very active in the Alabama Scholastic Competition
Association (ASCA) attending regular meetings and volunteering numerous
times to help with various events.

Above all else, Lee Henry is a teacher that cares about his players and
the sport of quiz bowl.

Thank you
Matthew Dennis
Scottsboro Quiz Bowl Coach
