Official Announcement: Chicago Open

Hello Everyone,

As folks may have surmised from my earlier posts I will be in charge of
editing Chicago Open this summer. Helping me out this year will be Chris
Romero and hopefully some other folks that we are currently negotiating
with.

This will be an academic submission tournament and the target difficulty
goal is to emulate past Chicago Opens; that is to say, somewhere between
ACF Regionals and this year's Nationals [though I reserve the
opportunity to up the ante a bit in the playoffs]. The tournament is
open to all comers and it traditionally attracts between 12 and 16 of
the most talented and competitive teams anywhere. If you like the
quizbowl, then you will have fun and you should register ASAP.

The tournament and the various coetaneous events accompanying it will
occur on the weekend of July 28-30 on the campus of the University of
Chicago [in a building yet to be determined].

I want to continue Subash's tradition of opening the tournament up
to potential hosts for mirror events on the east and west coasts, so if
any parties are interested in this, they should contact me at
eberdich_at_gmail.com.

Packet Specs: The format is pretty much ACF and since I assume most
folks coming to this tournament know how to write questions in that
style, I won't waste your time with any super specific instructions
beyond those offered below. If you do need some additional guidance
email me and we can discuss things in more detail.

I would like to receive 24/24 with the following breakdown per subject
area-

5/5 lit

5/5 history

5/5 science

3/3 religion, myth, philosophy [1/1 of each]

3/3 fine arts

1/1 social science

1/1 trash

1/1 geography

[Of course it goes without saying that these fine questions you all
submit should take into account regional and temporal overlap, blah,
blah, blah (ie. don't write me a packet where every answer is
British or Swahili or everything involves the 19th century—you know
what I'm saying)]

The questions should be sorted by category. So put all the history
tossups and boni under a nice heading that says "History" and
then follow that up with one for the "Science" and so forth.

Write your questions in 10 point Times New Roman and remember that while
I may look favorably upon your ten line epic about Aubrey
Beardsley's Tannhauser, I'll probably just be annoyed and chop
off the first two lines and curse your name. In other words, all
questions should be 6-8 lines long.

Tossups should look like this-

A true follower of feng shui, his favorite food is a "good" ham
steak. After a particularly harrowing encounter with a tramp who quoted
Marlowe's Hero and Leander while polishing off a mini bottle of
Southern Comfort, this man found himself wishing that he had never set
foot in New Orleans. He was sent there to lead his companions, Leo
Wolpert and Matt Lafer, to victory over Seth Teitler and his rag tag
band of Chicago players. A lover of mead, he is usually depicted in
painting with his trademark fedora. For ten points [or FTP] identify
this quiz bowl deity who once played for the University of Michigan.

Answer: Adam Cornelius Kemezis

Bonuses like this-

Answer the following about a book and its author for ten points each,

A. One year after it was completed, its author decided that the
protagonist's love interest, Sweet Sally McGinty, wasn't a
strong enough character, so her scenes were drastically cut in the final
version.

Answer: I Love Crack

B. I Love Crack might be this man's greatest work. He is also well
known for his poetry collections Funereal and Why so pale and wan?.

Answer: Remington Fluffer

C. Fluffer had a sensational love affair with this other author of the
poems "Because I could not stop for death" and "Damn it is
cold up here in my attic, I would like someone to rub my feet."

Answer: Emily Dickinson

The base fee will be $110, but if you get me a full packet by June 17, I
will knock off $25.

If you get it to me after July 8, I will add $25 to the fee. If you
don't write a packet and still want to play, email me and we will
see what we can do. Also, if you want to play the tourney with less than
a full four man squad I can probably be convinced to knock the price
down somewhat; again email me.

There will also be a $5 discount per buzzer (max 2 per team).

I hope to have details of any and all accompanying tournaments worked
out with their respective sponsors/writers in the next couple of weeks
and they will probably be posting their own announcements fairly soon.

If you have any questions or would like to officially register a team,
please e-mail me at eberdich_at_....

I hope to see many of you in attendance,

Ezequiel
