Big Lots trash tournament at UTC 10/22/06

I have been remiss! Thanks to Anthony Bush for bringing it to my
attention.

The UTC Academic Trivia Association will host the Big Lots Clearance
Open trash tournament on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 on the UT-Chattanooga
campus. This is our annual mirror of the outstanding and highly
entertaining FOGHAT tournament by Jeremy White et al. Note that Big
Lots will be one week after FOGHAT so if can be paired with our
college tournament, the Center of the Known Universe Open
(10/21/06.) We mentioned Big Lots in the earlier COTKU message, but
neglected to follow up with specifics till now. My bad.

ELIGIBILITY: Come one, come all. This is an open tournament,
meaning open to all players regardless of school affiliation or
status. It's also NOT a packet submission tournament. And we're
providing ways to make the fees really low.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS: All we need to know in advance is how
many teams you will bring. Please e-mail this information to
utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com. Feel free to cc: me at the above
address, but please make sure you send the message to the team
mailbox.

LOCATION AND SCHEDULE: As per custom, we'll start earlier on Sunday
than we would on a Saturday. Registration will begin at 8:30 am EDT
on Sun. 10/22/06, with play beginning at 9 AM. We hope to be into
playoffs by 5:30 PM and finished by 7:00, but we know better than to
make any guarantees on the schedule.

FEES:
Base fee: $80 per team
Minimum fee: $20 per team
Discounts:
- $5 for a working buzzer system (one discount per team unless we
run short of buzzers)
- $10, plus dinner Sat. night at Provino's, for providing a
competent full-time official for COTKU or Big Lots
[For those who officiated for us at our 9/30 high school
tournament, -$20 unless you use that discount on COTKU instead]

Discounts for original freelance questions: We need collegiate
academic questions for COTKU on Sat. 10/21/06. We also need
collegiate "junior bird" questions for Sword Bowl (Jan.), high
school questions for next March, and/or trash questions for
TrashMasters. So we'll offer a -$20 discount for each full packet
(25/25), or -$10 for each half packet (13/13), you can crank out
between now and Oct. 22. If you need distribution specs, let me
know. Questions should be sent not to the registration address
(utcquizbowl [at] gmail [dot] com), but directly to me (SteinhiceC
[at] comcast [dot] net.)

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
>From Atlanta and points south -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-24
west towards downtown, then follow the freeway splitoff for U.S. 27
North, downtown Chattanooga. From 27 North take the 4th Street exit,
within sight of the Tennessee Aquarium. Go right on 4th St. (you
have no choice) and follow it for ca. 1 mile. Go past the UTC Arena,
after which E. 4th St. becomes part of E. 3rd St. After that, take
the second right on Palmetto St. Go two blocks and turn right on
Vine St. (just past the EMCS Building.) Just before the place where
Vine St. is blocked off, the parking lot for Grote and Holt Halls is
on the right. Enter Grote by the door next to the dumpster.

>From Knoxville and points north -- take I-75 to Chattanooga, then I-
24 West; directions from there same as above.

>From Nashville and points west/north: Take I-24 east to Chattanooga.
As you round Moccasin Bend (freeway goes alongside river) watch for
two exit lanes on the right; take the less rightward of the two,
which will have signs above it for U.S. 27 N. Rest of directions are
the same as above.

>From Birmingham and points southwest: Take I-59 to the outskirts of
Chattanooga, where it dead-ends into I-24. Get on I-24 East and
follow the Nashville directions from there.
