What is the Transatlantic Quiz?

This quiz is a written test taken by individuals with no access to
reference materials or any other assistance. Questions in the English
language from four of the following eight categories make up the
first half, with the remaining four categories composing the second
half.

Categories (30 questions each, 120 questions per half, 240 questions
total) - a mixture of pop culture and academic trivia, including:

Culture: [Architecture, Fine Arts, Philosophy, Museums, Religion,
Mythology]

Entertainment: [Music (Classical, Blues, Film Score, Jazz, Rock,
World), Ballet, Musicals and Operas, Radio, Television]

History
[(<450AD),(450-1492),(1492-1900),(1900-date), Current Affairs,
Explorations, Famous People, Civilizations]

Lifestyle: [Costume, Design, Fashion, Food & Drink, Handicrafts,
Health & Fitness,Human Body, New Age Beliefs, Products & Brands,
Tourism]

Media: [Movies [(1900-1980), (1980-2000)], (recent), Literature
[(<1900),(1900-1980),(recent)], Poetry, Drama, Comics, Language]

Science: [Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Social Sciences, Fauna,
Flora]

Sport: [Track and Field, Team Sports, Motor Sports, Winter Sports,
Games, Hobbies & Passtimes, Records]

World: [Geography, Cities, Space, Technology, Transport, Inventions]

In general, but not exclusively, the material relates to the United
Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

. You have 60 minutes per half to answer as many of these questions
as possible. If you have finished before the time expires you may
leave your seat, but may not add or change answers upon return.
Please then respect the need for other players still quizzing to be
free of distractions. There are only points for correct answers, no
penalty for wrong answers.

. Unless stated in the question, last names are acceptable and
phonetically correct answers will be accepted. Answers are concise,
composed at most of a few words, a short formula, or diagram.

. Papers will be swapped with another player for marking at the end
of each 60 minute half.

. After the four genres from one half have been marked, you will get
your paper back and you have 5 minutes to check you agree with the
marking. Disputes must be referred to your proctor in this time.
Please indicate which answer(s) you are querying with a large "?"
question mark. The proctor will provide official adjudication on the
matter. The proctor's decision is final.

. Your checker should then copy your scores into the table on the
cover sheet. If you agree with their marking, sign next to the score
(s) to show your approval. Your complete script should then be handed
in. Once this has been done, no further discussions will be entered
into about your score. The score signed for will be considered to be
correct. Scripts will be returned once the officials have logged your
scores etc..

. Your score will be determined from your best 7 out of 8 categories.
In the event of a tie, the score you dropped from your lowest scoring
genre will be taken into consideration. If there is still a tie, the
person with the highest score in any single genre will win. If there
is still a tie the player whose next best genre score is highest (and
so on) will be deemed the winner.

. The overall highest scoring player on any 7 out of 8 categories
(with tiebreakers if necessary) from all participating venues will be
the Transatlantic Quizzing Champion 2008.

. In the event of any unprecedented occurrence or unforeseen
circumstances arising in the course of the quiz, the proctor may give
a ruling on the matter and their decision shall be final.

. Your commencing to answer questions in the quiz indicates your
complete and unequivocal acceptance of these rules.
