Re: Where were you when... ?

Tom's post made me curious about my memory.
Through quick web research I have confirmed that both the
Mercker no-hitter and Cobain death were April 8, 1994.
The calendar says that was a Friday. I have yet to
find confirmation that ACF Nationals was April 9,
1994.

Things I think I remember (but could be wrong): Crowded
hotel room to watch the Braves game. Found out about
Cobain the next day; I *want* to say I heard about it
from Julie Stahlhut.

The day of ACF Nationals
'94 also marked the grand opening of a Taco Bell
franchise in College Park. Go figure.

Then, on the
way back from a relatively disappointing ninth-place
finish, Harvard players were walking down the big hall of
the UMCP campus and brainstorming about "what we
need" for next year.

Two particular wishes came
up, at least as I remember them. (Again, this could
be strong evidence of embellishment after the fact.)
One was to get some grad student who knew EVERYTHING
about literature. The other was to get a freshman who
was quick on the buzzer and/or good at
geography.

(It's possible that the freshman was supposed to be a
science specialist, which would make the story less
coincidental, but I'm not sure.)

In any case, it's funny
that conversation should take place. Fall '94 marked
the Harvard debuts of Jeff Johnson and Mark Staloff.
Two national titles followed that spring.
