Re: ACF Nationals thoughts

"On a positive note, did anyone else notice the
increase in women? At the 1994 ACF Nationals, I think
there were only 5 or 6 total. Now, it appears to be
about 20%. It's almost to where a guy can go to a
tournament looking for a date, unless he's already married.
Of course the gals are stuck with a choice of Geek
A, Geek B, both, or neither for five points each.

Okay, fine, it sounds a bit boneheaded.

There
has been a gradual increase in female competitors in
recent years, not just in quantity, but also in quality.
In any given tournament, Emily from our team gets
20-30% of the team's tossups. At ACF Nationals, she led
our team in scoring at 20 PPG and 26.3% of team
points.

In the early- to mid-90s, many women were on a team
because they were the only one over 21 (rental car) or
they had a boyfriend on the team also. Julie Stalhaut
is a notable exception, being a driving force behind
Western Michigan and now in NAQT.

The era of the
"token female" is over.

Dating preferences are
valid only to those (male or female) looking for a
date.
