Bad negs (was Re: A Note on Andy Goss)

I'm sure I've done many bad ones myself, but the
worst offence ever belongs to a team mate of mine, who
shall remain nameless.

He was still rather
inexperienced when he was drafted in to an important university
match. He was told "only to buzz when he was sure he
knew the answer". Nevertheless, on the second tossup
of the game, upon hearing the lead-in "There are
many deceptively simple formulae in mathematics...",
he buzzed in, and named one. And it wasn't even
simple. The moderator cut him off after five seconds for
being boring. His defence later was that he liked it,
and reckoned it was at least elegant, if not
simple.

We lost the match. He has never played for the
university again.

Rob.
