Well, that's great. I think right now I know how University of Miami feels when they didn't get to go to the National Championship game even though they beat Florida State, and Florida State only made it because they ran up the score against weaker competition. I like how this ranking system puts a team that finished 6-7 ahead of my team, which finished 9-4 (University of Maryland). I also like how we beat three of the teams that are ahead of us, but that doesn't count for anything either. I know the ranking system is based on points and don't care about the things I've mentioned, but that in itself is questionable. Say a team is 7-6, and that they score an average of 400 points a game in their wins and their wins came against teams that finished below them overall. They average about 183 points in their losses, presumably against better competition. Finally, say they heard 300 tossups overall. This would give them an average of 13 PPT, but does that make them better just because they score high on the teams that are weaker than them? Also, another consideration is that moderators vary on how many tossups are read in a round. So if a team is playing another that is weaker than theirs in a room with a slow moderator, they won't be able to run up the score to satisfy this "points ranking system". If they play a better team in the same room, it wouldn't matter as much because the score was going to be lower due to the better competition and so the disadvantage goes to both teams. That's why the scoring system has its flaws. In addition to that, I think quality wins (wins against teams with winning records or teams that makes it to nationals) should be considered also. Some of the teams that made it into nationals by beating teams that averaged 6.38 and 3.56 PPT by 1695 points. Another made it by beating D2 teams with 1.62 PPT, 3.13 PPT, and 5.54 PPT by 1690 points while their wins against D1 teams were by 315 over 4 games. How is strength of schedule adjusted for again? Not that I am singling out those teams, it's just that there are detailed numbers out there that can be calculated for those regions. I know no system is perfect, but I think definite improvements can be made in the current system. I just think it sucks that doing well in a tough region counts for nothing. Andy MAQT
