Of course, this raises the obvious question:
assuming that all eight players are able to read(*), why
couldn't you just display the questions one word (or a few
words, etc.) at a time and not worry about reading the
text of the tossup?

physically capable of the act of reading; if you had blind
or dyslexic players, then I think out of equality
you would need to read the text as well. OTOH, I
think that if all the players on both teams are capable
of using the same modality, then fairness demands
that that modality be used whenever questions are
asked of both teams.
