Field of 64: First Round, Part 1

It's over, it's all over. Half the teams have
been sent home. And now, I gotta do write-ups. So, if
I have no clue what's going on, there's a reason:
I'm an idiot.

EAST
(1)Princeton 465, (16)
Fairfield 15
Princeton's B team is in at the half. The
15 by Fairfield came after a technical foul assessed
to the B squad.
(9) Georgetown 215, (8) Southern
Cal 205
Brian Goldenberg beats Joe Wright to the
buzzer with 5 seconds left to tie the match. A 30-20-10
ensues, with G'Town getting the 10 out of nowhere to
avoid OT.
(4) Penn State 285, (13) George Mason
85
No Hofer. No Shields. No problem. Cathy Vrentas,
future star (or current star) that she is, busts it out
on a surprised Mason crew.
(5) Texas A&M 285,
(12) Georgia Tech 125
The Aggies, ticked about a
perceived lack of respect from the east coasters, make a
statement in the early game and prepare to do the same to
the Lions in Round 2.
(6) George Washington 235,
(11) Northwestern 170
A back-and-forth first half
results in a 110-110 tie in the locker room. GW comes out
smoking for the final 9. When asked what Edmund
Schluessel's halftime speech was to rally the troops, Jon
Needle simply said, "You don't want to know."
(3)
Oklahoma 350, (14) UMBC 55
A statement game if ever
there was one, Oklahoma silences critics for at least
this round.
(10) Rutgers 195, (7) UCLA 185,
OT
After an up-and-down game which saw both teams score
15-30s, it came down to the tiebreaker, snagged by Erik
Kennedy for the victory for the Scarlet Knights.
(2)
Kentucky 330, (15) Bucknell 75
Bucknell proves to be
more than the average 15 seed, but the Wildcats ride
their two-headed monster of Seth Kendall and Kelly
McKenzie to an easy win.

WEST
(1) Illinois 460,
(16) Middle Tennessee 10
No issues here as Dom
Ricci and Mike Angel both score 60 points.
(9)
Wichita State 215, (8) South Carolina 175
Wichita
State's usual suspect lineup ekes out a victory in a
defensive struggle against the Gamecocks, despite Adam
Humphries' 2/2/1 line.
(4) Pittsburgh 285, (13) Rice
105
Matt Weiner and Eric Steinhauser go power-power to
start, and Rice never recovers. Pitt subs Weiner out in
the second half so he can scout the next
match.
(5) Duke 250, (12) Columbia 155
When Matt walks
in, he finds a halftime score of Columbia 130, Duke
85. He immediately begins to insult the Duke team,
who wakes up with newfound inspiration, getting the
next four TUs (one by each team member) and never
looking back.
(6) Vanderbilt 210, (11) UC-Irvine
160
Vandy goes up 210-165 with 7 seconds left as Willie
Chen calls timeout. He Vandy debates an intentional
neg, but Chen makes it a moot point as, forced to
guess before the power mark, he misses (though not by
much).
(3) Yale 330, (14) Florida A&M 75
Yale simply
overpowers the Rattlers, who aren't used to the level of
competition and, aside from a few buzzer races, can't get
into it.
(7) Iowa 225, (10) Florida State
180
With 20 seconds to go, Iowa nails a game-sealing
tossup on "The Music Man". They then get 20 out of 30 on
the bonus, and the next tossup can't be read fast
enough.
(2) California 390, (15) Montana 30
No contest
here, as both benches are used liberally at the half.
