Moon Pie(TM) Classic 4/28/01 (pt. 1)

Several people told me at ACF Nationals that they
hadn't seen this, so I'm reposting it...
 If you're
not among the 16 teams going to CBCI Nationals, there
is another quizbowl option that
weekend: UTC
will host the 3rd annual Moon Pie (TM) Classic* on
Saturday, April 28, 2001.
The Moon Pie Classic is an
ACF-lite tournament with packet submission optional but
strongly
encouraged. If the past two years are any
indication, expect teams from all over the country, or pretty
close to it. What other tournament meets rigorous
academic standards yet also involves marshmallow
projectiles being flung into an eager crowd?
 And if
that's not enough, for good measure we'll also have a
trash tournament , the RC Cola
Classic, on Sun.,
April 29. (Details to follow.)

ELIGIBILITY: The
tournament is open to all collegiate teams composed of
currently enrolled
students regardless of grade level
or experience. All team members must be enrolled at
the same
institution. (We forgot to say that last
year, didn't we? Sorry.) There will be two
divisions,
separated by experience level. Division II eligible teams
are:
 * Teams from 4-year colleges/universities
composed entirely of freshmen and/or sophomores
and/or
upperclassmen in their first or second year of intercollegiate
quizbowl competition.
(Important note: since the
untimed game and ACF-style format differs so greatly from
the CBI style, participation in CBI or HCASC
tournaments will not be counted as previous intercollegiate

experience.)
 * Junior college teams, even if they include
players with two or more years' prior intercollegiate
experience
All other teams will compete in Division I. Teams
are composed of up to 4 players;
a team may have
as many as 6, but only 4 will play in any given
round. Multiple teams may
participate from the same
school.
Due to availability of rooms and readers,
we've tentatively capped the field at 44 teams. If
demand warrants we may be able to expand this with more
readers.

FORMAT: This will be modified ACF style, with untimed
rounds of 20 tossups (worth 10 pts. each)
and up to
20 bonuses (worth a possible 30 pts. each.) Packet
submission is optional but gets you a significant discount,
as well as a great forum for the most entertaining
questions you can muster.

SCHEDULE: By popular
demand, again this year we're making this a Saturday-only
tournament.
Registration will begin at 9:00 EST and the
tournament will begin at 10. I'll have a better idea of when
it will end when I have a better idea of the size of
the field, but based on prior experience, expect it
to end around 8:30 or 9 PM.

FEES: Again, we
do not require packets but offer generous discounts
for packet submission. Fees
therefore can range
from $50 to $95 for a team:

 Base fee $95 per
team
 Discounts: - $10 for packet (25 tossups, 25 boni,
meeting the guidelines below) submitted by
Apr. 1

- $5 for a working lockout buzzer system
 - $10
for each team after the first from the same
school
Surcharge: + $10 for teams not submitting a
packet. [Packet deadline is April 15; no packets will be
accepted after midnight April 15 except by prior
arrangement.]
[Important note: if submitting, each team from
the same school will need to submit a separate

packet; also, packets must be blind to members of the
school's other teams.]
