Re: The Undergraduate Title

Although I
can see your arguments for such an idea, if it were
to happen, it would have to be loaded with
exceptions: i.e. it cannot happen if one team is in the
final, and it maybe should not happen if the gap between
the teams is too great.

However, I feel there
are two other arguments against it which make it
unnecessary. First, part of the experience of playing in a
certain tournament is to enjoy the spectacle of the
final. I know I would sure be put out if I had to miss
the final to play another decider match. It would
also not exactly have the feel of a final, as everyone
would be watching the other games. This could perhaps
be worked round if it were played in the same room
as the final beforehand, but that could conceivably
end up adding an hour to the schedule when most teams
are loathe to hang around.

Also, the whole
idea of the undergraduate title is to recognise the
team that did best against the competition without
graduate players - it is not like Division II, which is
viewed as a separate competition even when the fields
are combined. In this respect, it bears a closer
resemblance to the naming of tournament all-stars, for which
it would be laughable to suggest holding
play-offs.

Just my tupennyworth.

Rob.
