And since when was Journey to the West not an

For what it's worth, the Carleton
Frequency of Mention of Titles database project (see
http://www.student.carleton.edu/orgs/quizteam/lists.html) indicates that Romance of the Three Kingdoms (7),
Dream of the Red Chamber (5), and Journey to the West
(7) are all comfortably in the quizbowl canon of
things that come up with minor regularity. Journey to
the West is actually tied with Romance of the Three
Kingdoms as to the number of times it has "come up" in the
tournaments now in the database, a couple of mentions ahead
of Dream of the Red Chamber. Water Margin (aka All
Men Are Brothers) (1) and Golden Lotus (2) are well
behind. This of course only reflects data from the 112
tournaments from 1982 to 2000 that happen to have been
entered into the database so far.
