Re: ICT plagiarism (NOT) 2 of 2

Regarding the two examples given:

1) Holly
Golightly. Sorry, Stan, but that one was simply absurd. Here
are the two questions, first as used in ACF
Regionals, and second the NAQT ICT one -- nothing further
need be said about that example:

(ACF) She ran
away from home when she was 12 and was taken in by
Doc, the man she would later marry. Eventually, she
ran away to L.A. and then to New York, though she
split with O.J. Berman after skipping her tryout for
"The Story of Dr. Wassail." She remains an associate
of Bermans though, constantly trying to interest
him in the work of the writer who lives downstairs,
the nameless narrator whom she always calls "Fred,"
after her brother, until her brother is killed in the
war. For 10 pointsname this character whose real name
is Lulamae Barnes, the central character of Truman
Capotes Breakfast at Tiffanys.
Answer:	Holly
Golightly (accept Lulamae Barnes on early
buzz)

(NAQT) She changed her name from Lula Mae Barnes when
she came to New (*) York City, but gets in trouble by
unknowingly helping a Mafioso run his drug ring from prison.
In the film, she falls in love with Paul Varjak. For
10 points--name this fictional character in Truman
Capote's novel ~Breakfast at
Tiffany's~.

answer:	_Holly_ _Golightly_ (accept either name)

2)
Regarding the more serious example, the Roman Architecture
bonus that was said to be EXACTLY the same as one used
at the 1999 ACF Regionals -- I need you to recheck
where you think you'd heard it before, because that
question is not in my electronic copy of the 1999 ACF
Regionals. (I'm not flatly saying that there isn't somehow
the same question out there somewhere; I don't know,
and if there is, then I may be able to form an
opinion about what might have happened if not
coincidence. But, unless Stan's got a copy of ACF Regionals
that differs from the electronic version I have,
nothing like that question is there: I searched on
"Pantheon," "Titus," and "Caracalla" and found
zip.)

Here is the NAQT question (written, by the way,
according to the internal ID number, quite a long time ago
without having been used till now):

For 10 points
each--identify these landmarks of Rome:

A.	Set up by
Domitian to commemorate the conquest of Jerusalem, this
structure features a relief showing Roman soldiers carrying
off a menorah.

answer:	The _Arch of
Titus_

B.	Originally a rectangular building erected during the reign
of Augustus, it was turned into a round temple by
Hadrian, who generously preserved the previous inscription
attributing it to Marcus Agrippa.

answer:	The
_Pantheon_

C.	Fully one-twelfth of the water supply of Rome in the
early 3rd century went to the monumental baths
constructed by this Severan
emperor.

answer:	_Caracalla_

Intentional plagiarism of quizbowl questions would be
monumentally stupid, since all sets are retained forever by
someone or other, are being replayed over and over in
countless team practices, and would sooner or later be
noticed. If anyone does id this question as being found in
some other set as well as the 2001 NAQT ICT, let us
know and we'll try to figure out what happened. But it
apparently is not in the 1999 ACF Regionals.
