Pub Quizzes

Actually, this past Tuesday I participated at a
pub quiz in Milwaukee, run by some expatriate Brits.
Sort of fun--heavy pop culture emphasis and easy trash
at that (the two most difficult questions that I can
recall were Who was on the first cover of Sports
Illustrated?-which I didn't know, and What was Edward Land known
for--which I did--invented Polaroid.) Unfortunately, as is
usual in the QB world, eventually the outcome was
chosen by chance. My team needed to get the final
question correct to win, which was, name four of the top
10 best-selling books of all time which are not the
Bible. I asked if this was world-wide, they said yes. So
I picked Mao's quotations (the little red book),
Pilgrim's Progress, the Koran and the Book of Mormon. Mao
was on their list--the rest was all American
stuff-dictionaries and the like. When I went up to argue, they made
the point that the list was "best-selling", to which
I responded that many or most of the copies of the
Bible and Mao were given away so that didn't seem to be
the sticking point.
