Re: in light of recent comments (repost

And now for my list of the top ten Women of Quiz
Bowl, just 'cause someone
ought to tell them how
cool they are:

10. The quiz bowl team from Muir
High School, which consisted of two
members of the
womens' water polo team since all the real quizbowl
people
dropped out. They lost every game at our last high school
tournament but
had a good time, gave it a damn good shot,
and maybe they even decided to
keep
playing.

9. Jessie and Jetta of BYU, who are not only good
players but must be
really nice people to put up with
all those Simpsons questions. Special
mention to
Nephi's wife Gina for being a good sport and a good
moderator
at BYU tournaments.

8. Kristin Hamlin of
Denison, 'cause she loves the game, has red hair,
and
likes Ally McBeal. Here's hoping she finds some
teammates. (Come to
QuESADILLA and we'll see if we can't
form a kick-ass chick team.)

7. Julie Singer of
Maryland, who won that East Coast singles
tournament.
Way to go, Julie!

6. Mary Moran of Iowa State,
who, as Andy Wang says, is the nicest
literature
taker you'll ever meet, and dresses well at
tournaments, giving
them that much-needed element of
style.

5. T. Fred Carpenter, who kicks ass at trash and
isn't too shabby on
other subjects, and is also fun
to party with. Feel her fire!

4. Avanti
Athreya, who's apparently trying to help set up a new
circuit
team at the University of Washington. (You too! Come
to QuESADILLA!)

3. Emily Pike and Cheryl
Klein of Carleton, who wrote a damn fine
chick
packet, and Andrea Rossillon of Illinois, for defending
it (and just for
putting up with those wacky
quizbowlers out in the corn country.)

2. Julie
Stalhut, who buzzes in really fast, knows a lot about
trash,
likes bugs, plays interesting things on the piano,
gives us all those fun
things to talk about on
qb-chat, and always has a kind word to say
about
people. <You may insert warm fuzzies
here.>

1. Carol Guthrie, who could be known as the 'Mother
of Quizbowl', if that
wasn't such a lame-ass
title (I think I once read a packet she wrote
in
_1988_, and it was actually _good_) for running the
Tennessee Masters and
Tech MLK and probably other
tournaments for a really long time. She ought
to get a lot
of credit, in my opinion, for making the game as
good as it
is today.

Woo-hoo! You go,
girls!

beating Rob by some
pathetic score on a trash packet
