Comments on the Singles Tourneys

All who played them should praise Matt Weiner and
Andy Goss for providing the singles tourneys that were
played this weekend. I, for one, would not want to write
the hundreds of questions that were required. As with
any tourney written by one individual, there were
questions that were impossible and questions that were too
easy, but in the main the questions were accessible and
well written.

As for problems with the
tourneys, for Spencer, it would have been nice to play a
double-elim bracket after the seeding rounds, but I
understand the problems in writing enough questions. Better
distribution in the singles rounds would have been nice as
well.

For the FOIST, distribution was also a bit screwy, as
the packets were heavily kiddie lit/TV and rasslin'
oriented and light on the sci-fi/fantasy (which was both
to my advantage and disadvantage so it was a wash
for me). Also, it would have been nice to have a
correct double elimination bracket set up for the
one-on-one rounds, but that's my fault for assuming double
elim brackets are standardized.

All in all,
though, the tournaments were fun to play and I'm glad I
didn't volunteer to write them. Also, those who read and
ran these things at GW should get props as well for
doing so.
