Here are the results from the Inaugural edition of BARS (Berkeley Audio Recall Shindig). Derivative of tournaments such as Heavy Rotation and K-Tel Hell, this was probably the first tournament of this sort to be held West of the Mississippi. Anyway, the tournament started with a preliminary written test, held in the midst of the Berkeley mirror of Capitol Punishment III, consisting of 40 musical clips, in order to determine the ten participants in the buzzer competition. Participants were given 5 points for naming the artist and 5 points for naming the title of each song, given a clip. The top ten scorers of this preliminary round were: Jon Pennington...230 points Joe Wright...170 Matt Bruce...110 Chris Mayfield...80 Seth Teitler (aka Snowshoe)...75 Steve Jenkins...75 Maribeth Swiatek...65 Richard Mason...60 Amy Fuller...60 Matthew Kaufman...60 Because I could not hold the buzzer round after the Berkeley CPIII mirror, I decided that I would hold the contest on Sunday Morning, during our mirror of the Herbert Spencer Singles Tournament. Because Amy Fuller and Matthew Kaufman could not show up for the buzzer round, Ken Mitchell, who did not take the preliminary test, and Augustine Kim, who had the next highest preliminary score of anyone present, took their places. For the buzzer competition, participants earned 20 points if they could name the artist and title of a song in one buzz, 5 points if they could just name the artist or title after a buzz, -5 points if they buzzed in before the end of the clip and could not name either. If either the artist or title of the song was named, the person who named the other part of the answer would only earn 5 points. Here are the results of the buzzer competition: 10th Place...Seth aka Snowshoe...-5 points 9th Place...Maribeth...0 8th...Richard...20 7th...Matt...55 6th...Chris...60 4th (tie)...Augustine...65 4th (tie)...Steve...65 3rd...Ken...75 2nd...Joe...105 1st...Jon...195 As a result of his victory, Jon won a copy of American Hi-Fi's self-titled debut disc. All other participants were able to choose from a borage of other compact discs that I either received for free or bought for less than a dollar a piece. Anyway, I would like to thank all for participating and would be interested in running a similar tournament sometime during TRASH Regionals in November (provided Scripps College doesn't mind and that I have access to a laptop computer). If you would like to see a listing of all songs used in the tournament, e-mail me at arwmatt_at_...
