One thing
I've observed in the past 3 years of college bowl is
that tossup questions need to be "accessible" to
experienced quiz bowl players. By "accessible," I mean these
items should be in the general realm of
knowledge--things that people might have picked up along the way in
a good education and life experiences. People need
not to be an expert in the TU area to offer an
educated guess.
Alternatively, the area-specific
questions for all ye topic experts should be reserved as
parts of bonus questions. My favorite format is 5-10-15
because it allows for novice-medium-expert levels of
difficulty. Bonus question is also the forum in which to
introduce some important, but unfamiliar, material to see
if people like it.
