Falwell, et al. Part I

I was avoiding reading this board for the last
week, knowing I would be bitterly upset by the
proceedings. I was. Fortunately, I have now let my feelings
subside for 24 hrs, and can now post with levelheaded
dispatch.

First, I have found Hayden's posts both honest and
compelling. I believe Hayden has a unique insight into these
events, having been in such close proximity to the
horrors. BTW, I have a brother who works in Naval
Intelligence at the Pentagon. Ironically, he was on assignment
in Pearl Harbor the day of the attack. I am very
thankful he was safe, and that no one in his immediate
office was hurt.

Second, I find the attempts to
rationalize or somehow blame this murderous rampage on the
imperialist foreign policies of the U.S., the CIA,
capitalism, Nike, et al. to be untenable. It's akin to
exonerating the woman in Texas who murdered her five children
because she had postpartum depression. There's always a
choice to do good or evil. The new profanity of our
society today is the inability of individuals to accept
accountability for their actions.

As for Mr. Falwell: He
is not public enemy No. 1, but his remarks we're
ill-timed and insensitive, not to mention probably dead
wrong. While I might agree with his assertions that
America has turned from her Judeo-Christian roots through
a downward spiral of secularization, I disagree
that you can categorically say our national sins are
the reason for this terrible disaster. They might
be...but maybe not.
