Re: FAQTP Toss-Ups

Since I was one of the ones who yelled at people
to start talking about quizbowl again, I will add my
4/3 cents (I've got some Canadian change I need to
get rid of).
A problem with FAQTP questions is
that the phrase "For a quick ten points" primes the
players for a really easy, quick answer. FAQTP questions
tend to lean toward the very easy (there's no "FAQTP:
name the 1708 battle where Russian forces destroyed
the Swedish supply line.") So it just becomes a test
of pure reflexes. A good question should test both
speed and knowledge. If I want to have just my reflexes
tested, I'll have one of those hammer vs. knee tests in a
doctor's office.

Your example question isn't
particularly good as a question that begins "Which niece of
Creon" could finish, "chose not to help her sister
Antigone bury their brother Polyncies." I know that people
_probably_ aren't going to buzz in after the first clue and
say "Ismene," but a question should lead up to a
unique answer as soon as possible, and this should be
doubly true for questions that only contain a couple of
clues.
