BU's Bay State QB Classic IV - 12/8/01

Boston University College Bowl is extremely proud
to announce our 4th annual
Bay State Quiz Bowl
Classic, a high school academic tournament to be held
on
Saturday December 8th, 2001, at Boston University's
College of Arts and
Sciences (725 Commonwealth Avenue;
Boston, Mass.). This is the second
Saturday of
December, a date we plan to hold the event on both this
year and
in those to come.

The Bay State
Quiz Bowl Classic was first held in March of 1999, to
begin
the growth of a high school quiz circuit in the
Northeast. For years other
sections of the country,
namely the South and Midwest, have had
well-developed
circuits at this level. In conjunction with other
large
universities in the area and National Academic Quiz
Tournaments, LLC, the
BSQBC began with 14 area schools
fielding 28 teams, and Gloucester HS
(Gloucester,
Mass.) winning the first title.

Our 2nd BSQBC,
held in November of 1999, featured 16 teams from 9
different
schools, and was won by Brookwood HS of Snellville, GA.
Unlike our first
event, teams from across the country
were allowed to compete. The 3rd
tournament, held
this past December, had 21 competing teams from 12
schools,
with Georgia's Walton HS taking the crown over Detroit
Catholic Central by a
single game.

For those of
you who have played here before, our format will
remain the
same as in previous years. Matches are
played between two teams using a
lockout buzzer
system or alternate signaling system. A toss-up question
is
read, and the player who answers it correctly earns a
set of bonus questions
for his team. The bonus may
not be in the same subject area as the
toss-up,
but it is available to all the players on that team.
Conferring among
players is allowed on bonus questions,
but not on toss-ups. Subject
material is varied;
questions will include, but not be limited to
history,
science, literature, religion, philosophy, geography,
sports, and current
events. National Academic Quiz
Tournaments (NAQT), LLC, will again provide
questions for
the BSQBC. For those curious, we will be playing on
NAQT's
Invitational Set #27 [IS-27].

As has been the case in
the past, top finishers in the Classic will earn
the
right to participate in the 2002 NAQT High School
National Championship
Tournament, tentatively scheduled
for the weekend of June 8, 2002, at the
University
of Texas at Austin.

Schools may send up to 3
teams at this point. If any school is interested
in
sending more, please contact us and we can discuss it on
a case-by-case
basis. Teams may consist of any
number of players, but no more than 4 team
members
may play at the same time (basically, it means
substitutions are
allowed). The cost for participating will
be $40 per team, with any team
able to bring a
lockout buzzer system (or suitable alternative) receiving
a
$5 discount for each. I apologize for having to
raise fees $10 from last
year, but with BU's Student
Union becoming much stingier with funding this
year,
we're having a harder and harder time raising funds.
Teams coming
from long distances, or those bringing
multiple teams, may be eligible for
discounts in entry
fees. Don't hesitate to ask!

If you are
interested in registering or getting any more information,
please
contact either BU College Bowl (qbowl_at_...) or
Tournament Director Jon
Couture (joncooch_at_...). We
hope the quality and professionalism of our
event
in past years, something we pride ourselves on, is
enough to convince
teams to make the trip to Boston
in the freezing cold.

Thanks for reading, and
we hope to see you all at the 4th annual Bay
State
Quiz Bowl Classic!
