On the other hand, many grad students come (even
now) come into quizbowl without any prior playing
experience. Margolis, for example, who was widely known and
feared a few years ago, had at most a little campus
experience in College Bowl in the 1960s. Personally,
although I've had a long moderating/coaching career, I
never played until I started grad school again last
year. And while I certainly don't class with Yaphe, I
may not be atypical for grad students generally who
come to the game later in
life.
