Yes, there are a
number of competitions within Kentucky and elsewhere in
the nation that you could compete in. What school are
you from? Within Jefferson County there is league
play, and elsewhere in the state there are other
similar local leagues (generally playing in roughly the
same format as Governor's Cup). Let me try to name
some other things, although I'll warn you that my
knowledge of such things is a couple of years behind, so
some tournaments may have ended and others may have
started (and my memory may be faulty). Hart County hosts
a nice invitational tournament early each year,
with about 16 teams, but, as I said, it's an
invitational. There was a tournament at Western Kentucky
University at one point (I believe it was fall 1998); I
don't know if they ever held another one, but it may be
worth looking into. There has been a tournament in
Ashland at times, although it was cancelled due to snow
every time we planned to go. There is also a tournament
at one of the schools in Fayette County (I think it
alternates each year) sometime in February, IIRC, but I may
have the date completely wrong. There is a nice
tournament at Vanderbilt University each year, so that's not
too much of a drive; the format is closer to college
bowl formats than to Kentucky Governor's Cup, though.
(That means it has multi-part bonuses, longer toss-ups,
and generally more emphasis on knowledge than on
speed). We also went to several tournaments in and around
Atlanta (hosted by, e.g., Walton and Brookwood) which, if
I remember correctly, were not invitationals but
were open to anyone. Within Kentucky there is also a
science bowl tournament (all science questions, with a
somewhat unusual format) which is hosted (still?) by
Murray State University; the winner of that tournament
moves on to the national competition in D.C. (actually,
at the 4-H convention center in Chevy Chase,
Maryland, but close enough). The Kentucky Beta Club
convention (which I think is always held in Louisville) has
a quiz bowl competition as well (again, the winners
can play at the national competition) and I seem to
recall that the Kentucky National Honor Society
convention had quiz bowl as well, but I'm not sure about
that.

That's about all I can think of in and near Kentucky at
the moment. Depending on where you are in the state,
there are probably other tournaments open to you, and
there are probably Kentucky tournaments that I haven't
thought of or don't know about as well.

Hope that
was helpful,

Matt Reece (former Kentucky high
school quiz bowler)
