This is my first post to this group, and I would
like to discuss the topic of lies. Although I was not
at Deep Bench or any other tournament that has used
lies, I have seen lies on Jeopardy! and in many mind
games and puzzles.
The lie is a creative notion
of quiz bowl which gives a quasi-hint about the
answer. A well-constructed lie can enhance a game, but a
poorly-done lie can produce many hoses.
That being
said, I think the lie does not belong to serious
competitions such as ACF or any other regional or national
competition; however, the lie is a stupendous addition to
special tournaments and into the canon of TRASH twists to
the game. The lie should take its place in QB fame
with the mainly TRASH techniques of the 40-point blind
guess, the lame, the punt, and other unique innovations
such as the one-point clue.
