Re: Duke 2002 Academic Festival

There are several possible answers to the
following questions. I choose to offer some, perhaps, and
allow others a chance to put forward other
possibilities. I think this allows an opportunity for
interesting discussion about quizbowl.

1) Why should
the high school game completely resemble the college
game? If you believe it should, implicit in that belief
is the assumption that the high school game is
merely a "minor leagues" for the college circuit, and
has no value as an end in itself.

2) Why does
the college game not have worksheets? The most likely
answer is that College Bowl never had worksheets, and
all collegiate quizbowl is a variation on CBI, albeit
generally variations for the better.

3) What is
wrong with skewing questions towards balanced teams?

3a) Towards what sorts of teams is "regular" quizbowl
skewed towards?

3b) Towards what sorts of teams
do you *want* quizbowl to be skewed
towards?

4) If a worksheet is so bad, what makes Duke a good
tournament?
