Terrier Tussle X-One: 2/2 at BU (Part 2)

PACKET RANT

We intend to run the best
possible invitational in the tradition of past Terrier
Tussles. The best invitational requires the best
questions. These guidelines are therefore more stringent
than many invitational guidelines. We reserve the
right to reject questions for any reason, particularly
if the difficulty level is unacceptable. That said,
we will tell you promptly what needs to be replaced
and why.

In all honesty, we don't expect to
return packs because, on the whole, you all know what
you're doing. However, should things be grossly out of
balance, we will let you hear about it. We believe that
the pleasure you get playing at T11 will justify our
high standards.

Each participating team must
either submit its own pack, pay an extra $25 to play
without submitting or have a special waiver from us.
Identify, as clearly as possible, the teams and individuals
that contribute to each pack. Packs should conform to
these guidelines and to any appropriate NAQT
rules.

We plan on trading packets with George Washington,
Wisconsin and several West Coast schools also holding
tournaments throughout February. Whether your pack is used at
T11 or elsewhere, be assured that it will be used
somewhere. While pack trading isn't an ideal scenario, it
allows us much more leeway in scheduling. Our current
plan is to use submitted packs for a morning
round-robin, and traded packs for afternoon
playoffs.

PACK REQUIREMENTS

Each pack should contain 61
questions: 31 tossups and 30 bonuses. Timed play requires
more questions than untimed play. The exact category
distribution follows; it is fairly close to the so-called
"Stanford Guidelines." The fully edited rounds will
officially contain a fixed number of tossups and bonuses. To
maximize question quality and minimize repeats and other
annoyances, we still require that all 31/30 questions be
suitable for tournament play.

Write to the
difficulty level of NAQT "Invitational Series" questions. We
expect at least 16-17 tossups to be correctly answered
in each room, while a .500 team averages about 50%
bonus conversion. As edited, questions will probably be
slightly harder than NAQT "Invitational Series," mainly
because questions are inevitably harder than the writers
think they are. Even so, when in doubt, err easy rather
than hard.

Packs should be sent to
joncooch_at_..., or esmith2_at_... should Jon die before the
tournament and lose his e-mail access. If Jon dies, well
post his obituary on the Yahoo! Club.

MS Word
.doc files are preferred, but any format readable in
Word will be accepted. Should you use some format not
readable in Word, please include your pack in the body of
an e-mail. Send tossups and bonuses together in one
file, and please vary your questions (do not sort by
category.) Again, do not put power marks in your questions;
we'll take care of that.

The early pack
submission deadline is Wednesday, January 16, 2001. Each
acceptable pack that meets this deadline will earn its
authors a $20 discount from the T11 entry fee. The
regular pack submission deadline is Saturday, January 26,
2001. We encourage you to begin pack assembly well in
advance of the appropriate deadline.
