Re: What is the formula for PATH?

(ipse dixit)

Points per Adjusted Tossups
Heard [PATH]

PATH tries to estimate how many
points a player would score playing by himself or
herself. It does so by correcting (a) for the number of
tossups heard, and (b) correcting for the shadow effect
[the "stealing" of questions by teammates]. PATH is
calculated as follows:

A. Calculate the number of
points earned by a player [10 x TUs - 5 x INTs].
B.
Calculate the number of tossups heard by a player.
C.
Calculate the number of tossups scored by a player's
teammates, excluding the player.
D. Calculate the number
of interrupts scored by a player's teammates,
excluding the player.

PATH is then given by: [A x
20] / [B - C - D/2], assuming a player has played in
all games.

If a player did not play in all
games, then the denominator is multiplied by that
fraction of the total number of questions the player did
hear. [For the purposes of the statistics above, to
ensure their completion, it was assumed that players
played in all rounds. This did not affect the all-star
designation in any way.]

As the inventor of PATH, I
[Samer T. Ismail] would consider differences of less
than 5 on the PATH scale to be statistically
insignificant.
