Of course, adding those clues makes the question
longer, while swapping them in might increase the ability
to differentiate between top teams while decreasing
the ability to differentiate between mid-level teams,
that is those on the bubble for ICT qualification.
There is no completely fraud-proof way to write any
question, if you believe that there a single proper method
of obtaining any single datum of knowledge, as there
are actually multiple paths to knowledge. Most
question writers write from the mindset that there is one
path that is most appropriate, usually their
own.
Also, except perhaps for a giveaway, there is no clue
which is an automatic must-have for any given tossup
answer. If there were, they every tossup on a certain
answer would look pretty much the same, and quizbowl
becomes an exercise in who has more experience and has
heard the question come up before.
