Re: Grad Students in College Quiz Bowl

During the weekends I hardly ever waste my time
with the message board (slow connection speed + old
Mac + need to spend time away from my wife = not
worth the hassle), a policy to which this weekend
proved no exception. Thus, I missed the initial stink
aroused by the logorrhea emerging, sewage-like, from the
cloaca that is "wierdgsp"; I just read through the posts
a few minutes ago, and am gratified by all the
support for my boy Kelly (which I'm sure is comforting in
his dotage, and all). Like the rest of you, I noted
how stupid "wierdgsp" seems to be, and was ready to
direct some crazy ire his way; then, however, a couple
of thisgs occurred to me about his/her/its post. I
wonder, for example:

1. Why attack Kelly as being
a dinosaur? He's only been playing regularly on the
circuit since 1997-1998; there are many, many others who
have been playing as long or longer (Zeke, for
example; me, for a better one). In fact, there my be
"undergraduates" who have been playing longer; what
gives?

2. Why attack Kelly at all? He almost never says or
does anything objectionable at tournaments, on the
board, or on our web-site; you'd think, if an easy
target were wanted, I would have been singled out,
especially since I *am* nasty and mean in the aforementioned
fora, and am more susceptible to the criticism of being
around too long.

3. Is it just me, or does the
"oh, I guess you'll just lead another tournament in
scoring to get back at me" not sound like much of an
insult? Why not a really devastating retort, like "Oh,
yeah? I bet Kelly will soothe his hurt feelings by
getting agood job, marrying a nice girl, and living a
long time?"; you know, something with teeth in
it?

4. How would this ass-clown know anything about
Kelly's HS career? Kelly went to school in Somerset, KY,
not exactly a nationally prominent QB
hotspot.

Which leads me to conclude that these posts are, in
fact, too stupid to have been posted seriously; I
suspect that, instead, this is all a joke, in the spirit
of last year's NACutie business.

Just in case
this isn't a joke, however:

Allow me to venture
that this "wierdgsp" is a f*cking waste of life who
needs to quit the game, drop out of school, and go back
to food service. Kelly is good because he worked at
it, and if you want to be as good as he is, do some
damned work yourself (in fact, ask him for pointers; I'm
fairly positive he'll tell you how he did it). And as
far as justification for his playing? Well, there are
the obvious considerations of the games he's added to
the schedule of tournaments by providing another team
against which to play, and the money he's plunked down to
play at them to support the host school, allowing them
to in turn send teams to tournaments, and the cycle
continues. In addition, though, there are the tournaments
he's edited (two so far, one of which he _wrote_,
which he'll be repeating in two weeks), the packets
he's written (both for tournaments and freelance), and
the leadership he's provided to his organisation to
keep it (and the multiple teams it regularly sends to
tournaments; see above for why that's valuable) alive. I
wonder: as a putative "fairly good freshman player", have
*you* done any of these things? How do you justify
*your* playing?

Chew on that a while. In the
meantime, have fun at ACF Regionals this upcoming weekend
(edited by another big, bad graduate student; oh, the
pain!), since I'm *sure* you play ACF; and here's hoping
you don't come to Chicago, where Kelly will likely
bitch-slap you down, Ike Turner style.
