As the one who made this an issue, I gave Google
a shot; I was curious if putting the work titles in
quotation marks made a difference.

I really hope all this got at least someone to pick
up "Tonio Krger" and read it; it's really good, and
I think that as more people read it it'll turn up
more. For the record, I think the reason it is used so
often in German classes is because it is one work where
Tonio is clearly a stand-in for Mann himself. It has
been described as a "spiritual
autobiography".
