Well, I've been running a group for British quizzing on Groups for nearly a
year now, and even with some of the advert stuff that came in lately, it's
manageable. A few thoughts:

1. Receive messages by e-mail. You get them with much more reliability that
you did from Clubs, and you can reply using your e-mail if you are prepared
to take a few minutes to set it up. This is sure a bonus for people on
dialups and the like!

2. Have a group web site (go see
http://www.geocities.com/rob_linham/quizgb) to see what I mean. This allows
there to be a place where you can dump photos and files much easier, and
it's also a good point of contact if the group crashes. That crash on
Monday was unplanned, by the way, according to the mod info group. It also
means you can have a FAQ, and enforce a few house rules on general decency
and the like.

3. Don't use the database. Or the files. Or the photos. They all suck. Bits
keep going missing. The photos are almost unviewable compared to the old
Clubs. The database function, while it would be good for tournament
results, is simply not suitable as a point of long-term storage. You're
much better off with a dedicated web site.

4. The calendar can be scheduled to send out reminders of events, and the
mods can set the group to post a FAQ or whatever at regular intervals. If
you want to have some house rules, and also keep people informed of chats
and the like, I recommend these features. (Incidentally, for those
panicking about "house rules", head over the to the URL above and see what
I mean - a few rules enforcing the outer limits of decency, rather than
anything draconian)

I'm sure there was some other stuff I was going to say, but it's too early
in the morning.
