Science Masters I

This is a preliminary announcement for Science Masters I, an all-
science mini-tournament to be held this summer on the weekend of the
Chicago Open (the weekend of July 27th, or possibly the weekend of
August 3rd).

Format: 2-person teams. Solo players allowed, bastard teams allowed;
this event is open to anyone who wants to play. In the interests of
convenience for tournament hosts, this will be a small tournament--
probably 10 rounds, plus a tiebreaker round if needed.

Packets are 20/20, with the following distribution:
4 biology
4 chemistry
4 physics
3 math/CS
3 earth science/astronomy/astrophysics
2 technology/engineering/history/miscellaneous

This is intended to be (partial) packet submission, with central
editing and writing to fill out packets. Central editing and writing
will be provided by Kirsten Chevalier, Jason Paik, and myself. Teams
submitting 12/12 questions which fit in the distribution (i.e., not
12/
12 math, not 7/7 earth science and 5/5 technology) will play for
free;
teams submitting 6/6 questions which fit in the distribution will pay
$5 per person; teams not submitting questions will pay $15 per
person.
Freelance contributions in exchange for the question set are very
welcome. Question difficulty should be similar to ACF Regionals or
slightly harder; we are looking for quality science questions with
depth, on non-trivial subjects.

Again, this is intended to take place as part of the Chicago Open/
Capitol Punishment weekend, so we are shooting for a shorter event
that
will be easier to fit in between the main events. We are hoping to
run
Science Masters at the main sites for the Chicago Open/Capitol
Punishment weekend (UC Berkeley, Chicago, GWU). Anyone who wants to
mirror Science Masters, and anyone with questions or comments, should
email me at satelite_at_...
