I think it's true that the college circuit is more laid-back than the
high school circuit; this largely has to do with the fact that the
teams and events are for the most part student-organized and
student-run. The role of coaches and advisors is much more limited at
the college level.

However, I think you'll find that in quizbowl--just like any other
social group--there will be a few people that are elitist and
arrogant, but by and large most of us are still around because it's
fun. A large part of your experience will be determined by the other
players who are on *your team*--if they're in it "to win," you may
have a different experience than if they're in it "to play." Which one
you prefer depends on your own preferences and what you're looking to
get out of your involvement in quizbowl.
