Science Masters I results

Hi all,

Berkeley ran Science Masters I last Saturday evening. As far as I can
tell this was the first all-science quiz bowl tournament. Hopefully
there will be more.

11 2-person teams competed in two brackets, a 5-team bracket and a 6-
team bracket. Each bracket played one full round robin. The
tournament
started and ended much later than I'd hoped; after the 5 rounds of
round-robin play we decided to stop for the night. Three teams
were
declared tied for 1st place: Mike Usher and Jon Pennington had a 4-0
record in the 5 team bracket, Richard and Maribeth Mason had a 4-0-1
record in the 6 team bracket, and Grant Gavranovic and Chris Sewell
also went 4-0-1 in the 6 team bracket.

High scorers included:
Mike Usher, 87.5 PPG
Richard Mason, 56 PPG
Paul Lujan, 47.5 PPG
Kevin Costello, 46 PPG
Joel Kamnitzer, 42 PPG
Chris Sewell, 42 PPG
Prasun Ray, 41.25 PPG
Nick Meyer, 38.75 PPG
Abhishek Roy, 38.33 PPG
Stephen Lee, 37.75 PPG
Grant Gavranovic, 37 PPG
David Farris, 35 PPG
Eok Ngo, 35 PPG
Maribeth Mason, 33 PPG

I would like to thank my fellow writer/editors Jason Paik, Kirsten
Chevalier, and Jerry Vinokurov for all their work. Many thanks are
also
due to the following people: Devang Parekh, Paul Lujan and Stephen
Lee,
Richard and Maribeth Mason, Mike Usher, and David Farris, who all
submitted portions of packets; Evan Koop, Roger Bhan, and Aashoo
Tandon, who helped proofread and edit biology questions; Zach
Teitler,
who helped proofread and write some math questions; Juliana Froggatt,
Steve Kaplan, Ross Ritterman, Ray Luo, and Winston Teitler for
helping
staff the tournament.

Since we only played 5 rounds, there are 3 rounds that are blind to
everyone on the West Coast, and it is possible that we will try to
play
some of them sometime soon. Therefore, I ask people not to publicly
discuss the questions. I do welcome comments and criticism--let me
know
what you think about the questions at satelite_at_...
(satelite_at_ uclink.berkeley.edu)

The questions will probably be made publicly available in a few weeks.
