The 2008 Ontario Reach for the Top Championship was a provincial-level tournament that took place from May 12-13, 2008. 42 teams competed in the tournament, which were drawn from the various Schoolreach leagues across Ontario. The top 10 teams from the round-robin tournament on May 11 moved on to the televised finals, which were taped on May 13. The two finalists, University of Toronto Schools and Lisgar, qualified for the national finals in Edmonton, Alberta.

Tournament Format

Teams qualified for the tournament by finishing well (top 2-3 teams, depending on the league) in their region. The 42 teams were divided into 5 flights of 8 or 9 teams each. Within each flight, the 8 teams played a complete round robin. At the conclusion of the round robin games, teams were ranked based on their record, then, as a tiebreaker, the number of points for. The top ten teams moved on to the televised portion of the games at the TVO studio on May 14. Teams were paired up (#1 v #10, #2 v #9, etc.), with the winners of these matches, plus the highest-scoring losing team, called the "wild card" team, moving on to the quarterfinal matches. The winners of these three games, as well as one wild card team, based, again, on the highest-scoring losing team, moved on to the semifinal matches. The winners qualified for the national finals, and played in the final game of the tournament.

Notes

  • Prior to the televised rounds, there was a tie for 10th and 11th seed between South Secondary and Sacred Heart. Their captains had to face off in a best-of-seven snapper round to determine which team would make it into the Top 10. South Secondary's captain won 4-3.
  • After the preliminary round, there was a tie between Merivale and South Secondary for the "wild card" spot, with both teams scoring 340 points in their losses. Thus, another snappers tiebreaker, this time best-of-three, was held between the teams' captains. South Secondary was once again victorious, winning 2-0 to secure a position in the quarterfinals.
  • This is the first time since the Ontario Championships were televised in 2000 that the top-seeded team failed to win the provincial title, with Lisgar falling to champion UTS in a close finals game. Lisgar, however, would later go on to win the National Championship, defeating UTS in an even closer finals there. See 2008 Reach championship.
