Joined Honaker's Quizbowl team in 2005, but did not have his breakout season until his Junior year in 2007-2008. Van Dyke is well-renowned for his excellent knowledge of most things European, as well as Art and Classical Music. For these reasons, his scores are considerably higher in NAQT and HSAPQ-question formats, since VHSL questions usually only include 1 art or 1 music question per match. He is a multiple-time top ten scorer at tournaments, and he also won Auburn High School's neg prize at the first annual EQUINE.

He was also the Co-Captain of the 2008-2009 Honaker team, which finished 4th in the VHSL Group A State Tournament.
