A "real cheesemelter" is a quizbowl match, typically still in progress, in which (a) the teams' scores are rather close, and/or (b) neither team has an especially high score.
The term was popularized by Chad Kubicek [1], who has occasionally deemed games to be cheesemelters while moderating at NAQT national championships. Its pre-Kubicek origins and etymology are unknown.
