The 1997 NAQT Intercollegiate Championship Tournament was the inaugural ICT and was held at Penn on January 24 and 25, 1997. Only a DI champion was crowned; the Undergrad and DII championships were first introduced in the 1998 ICT.

Chicago came in 1st place in DI and Harvard came in 2nd place.

- This was the first time ever that a university in the United Kingdom took part in a quizbowl tournament, with Imperial College London competing and placing thirteenth. (This assumes that the various one-off matches between University Challenge and College Bowl champions that occurred prior to 1997 do not count as "a quizbowl tournament.")
