Carterville High School is a public school in Carterville, Illinois, located in Williamson County in Southern Illinois near Carbondale & Herrin. It competes in Class AA, the "large school" division, of the Illinois High School Association's State Championship series. The Lions have competed in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference since 2010 and have been regular participants on WSIU's Scholastic Hi-Q.

The team was founded by IHSSBCA Hall of Fame member, Brenda Bratcher, in 1981. Bratcher coached them for over 20 years ending in 2003. During her tenure Coach Bratcher accumulated over 350 victories, all over .500, culminating in an appearance in the State championship in 2002. Following Bratcher's retirement, the team picked up where it had left off, amassing a 54-3 record in 2004 including a Scholastic HI-Q championship, Masonic Sectional title, and State Runner-up honors, under under coach Mary Jo Osborn. The team remained strong for the next decade, seeing a resurgence in the mid-2010's. Construction of a new high school facility and population growth have contributed to Carterville's increased student enrollment. The Lions were promoted to Class 2A in 2015 where they continue to compete.
