The Alabama Academic Quizbowl Team (AAQT) is a student-run organization that competes in collegiate-level quizbowl competitions and hosts several high school and collegiate events throughout the year.
Beginnings
AAQT was started in the summer of 2006 by transfer students James Johnson and Alex Haber, both of whom arrived at the school that semester after two years at Faulkner State College. The program started its first "true" season the following fall semester, in which Johnson ran the team as president and Haber helped out as vice-president. Former Faulkner players Jonathan Thompson and Jonathan Byrd also arrived in Tuscaloosa that semester and joined in the effort to build a program. The team attended its first-ever tournament that November in Nashville, TN, at Vanderbilt University and became a regular on the Southeastern circuit as well as at ICTs each year.
The arrival of Jake Sundberg and several other strong graduate students in 2010 helped Alabama to a run of 3 straight top-15 finishes at DI ICTs from 2011-2013.
