Ontario Quizbowl Association
The Ontario Quiz Bowl Association (or ONQBA) is an organization founded in June 2011 to promote quizbowl in Ontario to students of secondary schools, colleges, and universities. It has held an Ontario Provincial Championship every year. For most of its history, it has been run by Ben Smith.
The Ontario Quizbowl Association (ONQBA) has made an agreement with the Guelph trivia club to take over organization of the provincial tournament. The organization has a website and newsletter, which advertises tournaments, profile university clubs and list ONQBA decisions, and continue school-targeted (ie: the newsletter and other mailings) and student-targeted (ie: Facebook events and groups) outreach. The ONQBA use any surplus end-of-year funds to support Ontario teams attending national tournaments in the United States including PACE NSC, NAQT HSNCT and with the hope that one day, they can support a NASAT team.
Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the ONQBA began to certify tournaments. ONQBA offer different discounts at provincials for schools that hosted and/or did well and/or participated a certified tournament. They will certify any academic quizbowl tournament that has already been certified by PACE and/or NAQT and/or uses a recognized student written event (e.g. SCOP Novice, Early Autumn Collegiate Novice, GSAC) and has an ONQBA member in its staff as a check to make sure the tournament runs smoothly. An ONQBA member must staff in at least one event every year and if applicable, vote at least once a year in an ONQBA procedure. Any events that don't meet these criteria will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
More information on the organization, upcoming and past events, can be found on their website. [1]
