Michigan State Championships 1988-2019
In 2020, there was no state championship due to the COVID 19 pandemic, which was a catalyst to the eventual formation of MIQBA. Prior to 2020, there were two separate and distinct state championship meets. The Michigan High School Quiz Bowl State Championship was held at Michigan State University under the direction of their Honors College. This particular event first began in 1988 and more divisions based on school size were added in 1990 and 1991. Until 2012, the tournament used Knowledge Master Open (KMO) questions, which MSU players edited to make them more factually accurate. Later on and through the efforts of the MSU Academic Competition Club, the tournament ran on HSAPQ questions in a tossup/single-part bonus format. In 2018, NAQT questions were adopted for the tournament.
Starting in 2000, the University of Michigan and their Academic Club instituted a separate event, the NAQT Michigan State Championship, which also utilized NAQT questions. Oftentimes, teams would attend both tournaments.
Pioneering a new era for quiz bowl in Michigan, Jimmy Dunn, now president of MIQBA, orchestrated the current approach for the state championship meet. By unifying the efforts of both the Academic Clubs of Michigan and Michigan State, there is now a single state championship tournament. The University of Michigan hosts the NAQT Michigan Class A State Championship and Michigan State University directs both the NAQT Michigan Class B and Class C/D Championship.
