Liam Daly is a quizbowl player at the University of Edinburgh, where he studies medicine. Liam comes from a small hamlet in the Scottish Highlands, making him the northernmost quizbowler on the British circuit; by complete coincidence fellow Edinburgh player Lovel Hearn's grandmother lived in the same area. Liam's specialist subject is European History, but his expertise lies more specifically in the history of various fascist regimes. Outside of quizbowl, Liam competes in athletics, including track events like the the 100, 200, and 400 metres.
Quizbowl Career
Liam's tournament debut came at the northern mirror of 2024 British Novice held in Manchester, where he would join Lovel Hearn, Abbie Isabel, and Kathryn Knispel on the Edinburgh C team which finished 3rd, before experiencing an infamous nightmare of public transportation failures. Individually, Liam was the 2nd highest scorer at the site, putting up 68 points per game after re-bracketing, when his teammate, Lovel, began trying to fall asleep. Having already been forced to miss the first round of the tournament due to the cancellation of a morning train from Edinburgh to Manchester, Liam's travel woes were not quite concluded. The cancellation of the final three trains that would have run from Manchester to Edinburgh that night, left Liam and the rest of Edinburgh C stranded in Manchester. Eventually Edinburgh C came up with a plan D; their return to Edinburgh would involve an overnight coach from Manchester to Glasgow followed by a bus from Glasgow back to Edinburgh. While Edinburgh C waited in Manchester's bus station, Liam was called upon to ensure the safety of the severely sleep deprived Lovel, who had not slept at all the night before the tournament (Lovel was ultimately awake for 45 straight hours). The coach finally arrived at 01:15, an hour late, and delivered Edinburgh C to Glasgow at 05:26; the team eventually arrived back in Edniburgh at approximately 07:00, having fist left for the tournament at 06:13, the previous morning.
Liam's next tournament experience came in May 2025 and risked no travel complications, as it was the UK's northern mirror of VAULT, hosted in Edinburgh. Liam once again appeared on a team with Lovel Hearn, this time joined by Arun Uttamchandani. As a team of three, they were the only Scots in attendance at the tournament, finishing 4th with 5 wins and 5 losses. Notably, this tournament was the site of a rigorous scientific experiment, whereby during the lunch break Liam and Lovel drank a pint of Tennents and cider respectively to test how the alcohol would impact their quizbowling performances. The results were inconclusive, as Lovel's performance improved while Liam's did the reverse.
